The ever-changing combination of light and shadows add to the beauty and enjoyment of the challenging Shadow Course at Lost Canyons. Built on land of which Pete Dye remarked, “the best suited and the most naturally beautiful land that I have ever had the opportunity to design upon”.

Shadow Course Hole Detail: Back 9Please allow this page to completely load before navigating through the Hole Details.

Player Notes: The inward nine begins with a challenging par 4 played into the direction of Whiteface Mountain. A three-wood, long iron, or driver must be played to the narrow landing area. The second stroke must be played to this multi-tiered green that is framed by a mound on the right, and large, shallow bunker along the left side.

Player Notes: The eleventh hole has been influenced by one of golf’s most influential designs, the Redan hole at North Berwick in Scotland. This kidney shaped green slopes from front to back, and from right to left. The green sets up well for the player that successfully plays a draw. Deep bunkers and the Shadow Course’s only substantial tree, a native Cottonwood that grows in Dry Creek by the green, frame this beautiful hole.

Player Notes: Named for the classic Gary Cooper western, the twelfth hole is a very good, long par 5. The tee shot should be played along the left center of the fairway. From there, long hitters may wish to gamble and try to reach the green in two. Deep bunkers and the dry creek bed meander along the left side. The large, sloping green will reward a well-struck shot, and give the opportunity for the player to make a good score on the hole.

Player Notes: Like the classic short par 4s at Ballybunion in Ireland, steep slopes on either side guard the fairway to the thirteenth, before doglegging sharply to the right. A pot bunker in the center of the fairway must be cleared to leave an uphill pitch to the large green. The hole is named for course consultant Fred Couples’ college golf team, the University of Houston Cougars.

Player Notes: The fourteenth is a downhill par 4 that bends to the right. Long hitters may attempt to drive this green when the conditions are right. The tee shot must avoid the deep pot bunker on the right side of the fairway. The approach shot is played to a large, but deceptive green that slopes from front to back. A large bunker guards the right side of the green.

Player Notes: This long, straight par 4 plays up a gradual hill with Dry Creek along the left side of the fairway. The tee shot should favor the left center of the fairway to provide the best angle to the green. A steep slope to the right guards the narrow green, and deep bunkers to the left. A par 4 is a very good score on this challenging hole.

Player Notes: In its beautiful, solitary setting, the sixteenth green lies across Dry Creek at the base of small hill. The player must avoid the bunkers and lateral water hazard that guard short and right of the green. The smart play is to aim to the left of the flag, and let the contour of the green help to get the ball close to set up an opportunity for birdie or par.

Player Notes: This par 4 doglegs gently to the right from the tee. The uphill approach shot is a long or middle iron played from the wide fairway, that is made challenging by the prevailing breeze coming from behind. It is wise to land the ball on front of the green, and let the ball roll to the flagstick. Deep bunkers guard the right side of the green.

Player Notes: The home hole is a challenging par 5 played to the crest of a pass between two hills. If the tee shot can be played to the plateau fairway to the right, the player will have a view of the green, and may wish to attempt to reach the green in two. If the tee shot is hit low or to the left, the player should play a middle iron toward the bluff in the distance. In either case the Bermuda grass fairway tumbles down the other side of the hill. From there, a pitch of about 100 yards is played to a small, undulating green that is surrounded by deep bunkers. If the green is missed, recovery is very difficult.
